Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin, Harry Potter, Paddington 2) stars as Jack in what promises to be a definitive production of the celebrated modern classic. The Oscar, Bafta, Golden Globe-nominated, Emmy-winning Gleeson makes a long-awaited return to the stage in his native Dublin, as well as his much-anticipated West End stage debut.

'And there's no dark like a winter night in the country. And there was a wind like this one tonight, howling and whistling in off the sea. You hear it under the door and it's like someone singing. Singing in under the door at you. It was this type of night now. Am I setting the scene for you?'

THE WEIR is the play that brought McPherson (‘one of the finest writers of his generation’ -New York Times) to the world’s attention as a truly great writer, winning the Evening Standard, Critics’ Circle and Olivier awards for Best New Play when it premiered at the Royal Court.

The tallest tales reveal the deepest truths.

On a stormy night, four local men gather in an isolated pub in rural Ireland. Their usual banter and everyday lives are disrupted by the arrival ofa woman called Valerie. The stories they weave to impress her are gripping, haunting and deeply unsettling. Little do they know that she has a profoundly personal story of her own, the sharing of which will leave them all shaken.

THE WEIR is a testament to the need for human connection, the possibility of hope, and the enduring power of storytelling.

The Weir Review: Ghost stories and fireside pints — the perfect autumnal night out

It’s no secret that Ireland is a nation of storytellers. From my personal favourites, Van Morrison, Erin Quinn from Derry Girls, and Frank McCourt of Angela’s Ashes, to the OGs James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, Bram Stoker, and Samuel Beckett, spinning a yarn is practically part of the DNA. Conor McPherson sits firmly in that tradition, and his 1997 play The Weir—which scooped both the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best New Play—shows exactly why.

The setting is a small, windswept pub in northwest Ireland – seemingly isolated from the outside world – the kind of place where the fire crackles against the howling wind outside and you half expect your pint glass to rattle from the gusts. At first it’s all weather talk, fishwife gossip about land sales, and the comforting routine of “just a small one” (or sometimes a “large small one”). Behind the bar is Brendan, pouring pints for locals Jack the mechanic and Jimmy. Into this comes Finbar, the flamboyant property man who’s essentially bought up half the village, strutting in with ‘Ninja Turtle’ karate chops and high kicks to introduce Valerie, a “blow-in” up from Dublin. She’s the outsider, and her presence nudges the men into showing off with their tall tales — first light, then eerie, then deeply personal
